Our Work in Health
United Way is addressing some of the behaviors that lead to health problems in our communities. Along with our partners, we are targeting substance abuse, family violence, and the heightened mental health issues that have developed since Hurricane Katrina. We seek to create a continuum beyond traditional service providers to include prevention and education programs, relationship skill development, and treatment options to provide community support systems for those experiencing emotional difficulties:
- Life skills training to support the development of good parenting skills, coping skills, communication skills, etc. Intended result: Individuals and families have the opportunity to gain the skills needed to build healthy relationships.
- Individuals and families access safe havens from all forms of violence or abuse and receive preventative education about family violence. Intended result: Families/individuals do not experience domestic violence or child abuse/neglect.
- Substance abuse counseling: Individuals and families receive prevention education, intervention and treatment for addiction. Intended result: Individuals do not engage is risky substance abuse behaviors.
